Make A Commitment - Make It Public - Make It Happen!Creating An Active and Healthy Environment For Our Children
Children learn by our example and they model what we do. Creating an active and healthy environment around our children will promote healthy habits that will last a lifetime.
Create an Active Environment- Make time for the entire family to participate in regular physical activities that everyone enjoys. Try walking, bicycling, rollerblading, or hiking. - Join other neighborhood families in activities like softball, baseball, touch football, soccer, hide-and-seek, etc.- Enroll your child in a recreational, structured activity of his/her choice. This can range from football to dance to gymnastics or martial arts. Let them choose what they enjoy to do. The idea is to get them moving.- Assign active chores around the house like raking leaves, mowing the lawn, taking out the trash, or washing the car.
- Encourage your child to try as many new activities as possible.
- Limit your child’s time on the computer or in front of the TV.
- Enroll your child in a children’s gym or fitness camp.
- Make an effort to keep physical education and recess a part of your child’s school day.
Create a Healthy Eating Environment
- Pack healthy lunches and snacks for your child. At least, you are giving them the option to make a healthy choice.
- Make the time to eat healthy meals together.
- Have children choose healthy recipes for meals.
- Allow your child to prepare the healthy meal with your help.
- Load your refrigerator with nutritious items like fruits, vegetables, bars and low-fat dairy.
- Avoid serving large portions.
- Limit the frequency of eating out.
- Make dinner a family event without distractions like the TV.
- Visit your child’s school to see the snack and meal options in the vending machines and cafeteria. Go to school meetings to promote healthy meal and snack selections.
